time pieces

There was a time when our ancestors
do not have clocks on the wall
no alarm clocks that ring bells in the morning
or wrist watches to tell time
when to plant, when to harvest,
when to wake or when to go to slumber
When to dine and when to play
We look at the evolution of time
from the sundials, water and combustion clocks
when ancient people tried to measure time.
There were clocks on top of towers
to tell the masses when it's time
the train leaves and departs
when the market opens and closes
There were table clocks on top of fireplace mantles
and cuckoo clocks that made noises to alert us every hour.
There were pocket watches with chains that gentlemen used to wear
There were wrist watches women wear adorned with gems
I remember the 2 watches of my youth the most
I wore them for decades
The transparent but fun colorful watch I wore as a child everyday to school
and the tiny mother of pearl bracelet wrist watch so clean in design,
there are no lines or numbers
only hands that move to tell the hour and the minute
Now, we have watches in our phones and wrists that can do almost anything
but time as we know it is not what it seems
In the future, how will they measure it?
