Happy mother's day

To all the women past and present

from the north, south, east and west

for their contributions to nurture

not just their own children

To the women who cared for

all creatures big and small

To the women who concocted

recipes not just in their own kitchens

to feed the hungry and the thirsty

To the women who heal the sick

and comfort the needy

To the women who wrote letters,

Climbed mountains night and day

To the women who painted, sculpted

to bring all colors of the rainbow

to brighten our dull days

To the women whose curiosity

enhanced science

To the women who explored

the unknown whether on land

space and sea

To the women who cared for our common home,

the mother earth

To the women who loved , protected and defended

the future of all children

Barefoot or in glittering high heels

in laced up boots, sneakers or slippers

We run, we leap, we swim,

we climb, we fly, we walk

we dream and hope with you.

Happy mother's day to all the amazing women!

*The book the city of Ladies was written by Christine de Pizan , a medieval woman who

"feeling frustrated and miserable after reading a male writer's tirade against women,

Christine had a dreamlike vision where 3 virtues- Reason, Rectitude and Justice- appear to correct this view.

They instruct her to build an allegorical city in which womankind can be defended against slander, its walls and towers constructed from examples of female achievement both from her own day and the past: ranging from warriors, inventors and scholars, artists and saints. Christine de Pizan's spirited defense of her sex was unique for its direct confrontation of the misogyny of her day , and offers a telling insight into the position of women in medieval culture" - quote derived fromL The Book of the City of Ladies published by Penguin books 1999.
